THE IMAGE — the next spring oil/canvas - 24x48

I am always mediating between the image and the imagined.

When I free myself from the constraints of realism, I can imagine earth, wind, water, shadow, and clouds as I want them to be, rather than as documents or portraits. But there’s also the view, full of meaning, that captures your heart and insists on a more faithful likeness.
.
Over all, there’s the joy of working with oils. Applying color, true or arbitrary, layering paint thickly, scraping it, withholding it, sometimes dark and dense, sometimes airy and translucent, always sensual. And while I sometimes try for quiet neutrals and smoky grays, color often takes  the upper hand.
